Trezevant Approves Wastewater Upgrades, Addresses Water Loss

Trezevant’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved two major wastewater improvement contracts during their meeting, August 12. They also heard from Water Operator Erik Grimes regarding a water loss prevention plan, and other updates.

Wastewater Project

They consist of upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant/lagoon and repairs to parts of the sewer line system.

“We had one bidder for the wastewater treatment plant project,” Smith told the board. “Grinder, Tabor & Grinder of Memphis came in at $511,114, which will cover a new aerator and a system to help reduce nitrogen and phosphorus.”

For the sewer line work, Smith said several companies submitted bids. Suncoast Infrastructure of Mississippi had the lowest bid at $168,177.

“That includes about 1,800 feet of sewer line to be lined and two failing manholes replaced,” Smith added.

The two projects together remain within the town’s grant allocation, leaving a cushion of $20,000 to $30,000 for additional line repairs, if needed.

Smith said that he will send the contracts to the state, and hold a pre-construction meeting with a month.

Plant upgrades should be completed by late spring or early summer, 2026. The sewer lining work could wrap up as soon as March 2026.

Water Loss

Public Works Manager Erik Grimes reported that Trezevant’s system is losing 41 percent of treated water before it reaches customer meters.

“The comptroller sent us a letter and said we have to put a mitigation plan in place,” Grimes said.

Engineer Smith assisted Grimes in drafting a plan, as well as helped identify possible areas of loss.

Grimes noted that most of the loss is tied to aging, inaccurate meters and a possible underground leak.

“David Smith is going to help us look at new digital meters that can be read with a tablet. If we can get them at little or no cost, that’s the route we’ll take," Grimes added.

Town Dumpster

Alderman Dan Dieringer said new policies are in place for the town dumpster, which will remain locked except during weekday hours.

“If a resident wants access on Saturday morning, they can call in and city personnel will unlock it for them," Dieringer said.

He also said that employees will check what’s being dumped.

“We want to make sure paint, mattresses, and other restricted items don’t go in," he said.

The dumpster will be emptied every two weeks.

Sidewalk Update

Last month, resident John Quinn addressed the board about conditions of sidewalks in town. He noted that they were a safety hazard for pedestrians.

Quinn was scheduled to be at August's meeting to hear updates on the matter, but was not present.

However, Mayor Bobby Blaylock said a few words.

"We're working on it," he said. "We'll have to work on them a little at a time until we get them fixed."

Maintenance Supervisor Mary Jo Hall explained that it is currently too hot to do the necessary concrete work.

"You have to be really careful, because if [concrete] dries too fast, it'll crumble," she said.

"If people just bear with us and be careful," said Blaylock. "They could go down to the walking track and walk."

Hall said that most of the work is mostly minor repairs in various places.
