What started out as a calm, fair Tuesday, August 19, turned into a wild evening when severe thunderstorms developed in the area, bringing damaging winds.

The storms started at around 5:30 and moved through by around 8 p.m. Winds knocked down several trees and affected various parts of Carroll County Electric’s power grid.

“We had five or six areas of focus, plus a handful of isolated outages,” said Ryan Drewry, General Manager of Carroll County Electric.

Larger outage areas included Leach, Huntingdon, Rosser, and out by the Carroll County Airport.

Drewry estimates that around 750 customers lost power.

The largest of the outages occurred when winds knocked over a utility pole near Mustang Drive in Huntingdon just before 7 p.m.

Huntingdon Fire Department had the east-bound lane of East Main Street blocked, as well as Mustang Drive while line crews replaced the pole.

“At around 8:30, we pulled our McKenzie crew over to the Huntingdon territory to help out and speed up the restoration process,” Drewry said. “99% of customers were back on just before 11 p.m.”

Throughout the storm event, there were reports of fallen trees across roadways on McLey Highway (SR-77), in Yuma, in the Dollar Community, and others.
