The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has released an official statement regarding the ongoing case involving former jailer Jordan Hughes, who was indicted this week by a Carroll County grand jury.

Chief Deputy Joel Pate told Carroll County Observer that Hughes was placed on unpaid administrative leave following his indictment on Monday, September 8.
In a press release, Pate said the Sheriff’s Office first became aware of the incident in October 2024 and immediately contacted the District Attorney’s Office of the 24th Judicial District.
“Administrative staff were immediately in contact with the District Attorney’s Office of the 24th Judicial District in regards to the facts of the incident,” Pate wrote. “The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has cooperated with all aspects of the District Attorney’s Office investigation of this incident to provide a thorough, transparent and unbiased investigation into the incident.”
He added that the department is committed to maintaining public trust.
“The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office wishes to maintain integrity and trust among our community, so therefore our office will continue to be fully transparent and cooperative throughout the course of this investigation,” he said.
Due to the ongoing nature of the case, Pate said the department cannot release details and referred all specific questions to the District Attorney’s Office.
Hughes was indicted on an assault charge stemming from an incident on October 10, 2024, when he allegedly pepper-sprayed inmate Johnathan Pierpoint while Pierpoint was seated.
Surveillance footage released by the department shows the incident.

Hughes was arrested and booked into Carroll County Jail on September 9. His bond was set at $1,000, and he posted bail roughly an hour after he was booked.
Hughes will be in court on October 2 at 8:30 a.m.
