First responders said they lost count how many accidents have happened at the intersection of Church Street and U.S.-79 Bypass in Atwood since the new road opened, but the most recent two-vehicle incident on Monday, October 20, injured the juvenile driver of one vehicle, and caught the other vehicle on fire.

According a preliminary report by the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), as well as those on the scene, a 17-year-old juvenile was driving a 2011 Dodge Caliber eastbound on the Atwood Bypass when their car collided with a 2002 GMC Yukon operated by 21-year-old Marshall Leach.

The juvenile’s Dodge veered left into the median while Leach’s Yukon exited the right-hand side of the roadway and tumbled down a slope.

When Atwood and McLemoresville Firefighters arrived on scene, the Dodge was in flames.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.

Baptist EMS arrived shortly after, evaluated those involved, and took the juvenile to Baptist Hospital for further evaluation.

Leach was not injured.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputies controlled traffic until the scene was cleared.

According to THP’s report, both drivers wore their seatbelts and no one faces any charges.
