A Weakley County Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot and killed early Friday morning while responding to a disturbance call in Martin.

According to a press release from the Martin Police Department, officers were called to the Days Inn on University Street around 2:51 a.m. for a report of possible shots fired. Deputies with the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist.

As deputies arrived in the area around 3:09 a.m., they encountered a vehicle leaving a nearby gas station. Authorities say the driver fired shots from the vehicle, striking a deputy.

The suspect was taken into custody shortly afterward. The wounded deputy was transported to Volunteer Community Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

In a statement released Friday morning, the Tennessee Sheriffs’ Association said it was mourning the “tragic and heroic line-of-duty death” of the Weakley County deputy.

“This devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the extraordinary courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment demonstrated daily by law enforcement officers across our state and nation,” the association said. “The deputy’s sacrifice represents the highest calling of public service — placing the safety and well-being of others above one’s own.”

The association extended condolences to Sheriff Terry McDade, the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office, and the deputy’s family, adding that the loss of one deputy “is felt by every sheriff’s office and every law enforcement agency across Tennessee.”

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been requested to investigate the incident. Officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public. Further details are expected from TBI.
