A Carroll County teen was hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash Saturday night on Terry Road. The other driver now faces DUI and vehicular assault charges, according to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Sawyer Sutton, 18, who graduated as valedictorian of West Carroll’s Class of 2025 just three weeks ago, was behind the wheel of a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado when the collision occurred around 10:45 p.m.

The impact of the collision trapped Sutton inside the vehicle. McLemoresville Fire Department Volunteers had to pry the driver’s door open to extricate him. Sutton was then airlifted to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, where he was treated for multiple injuries.

Zachary D. Simpson, 25, was arrested following a crash on Terry Road Saturday night and charged with DUI, vehicular assault, and violation of the implied consent law.

A 16-year-old passenger riding with him was also injured.

The second vehicle involved was a 2022 Ford F-150 driven by 25-year-old Zachary D. Simpson of Jackson, who sustained minor injuries.

Simpson was booked into Carroll County Jail  on charges of vehicular assault (reported as DUI), driving under the influence, and violation of the implied consent law.

He was released June 1 on $15,000 bond.

Responding agencies included the Carroll County Rescue Squad, McLemoresville Fire Department, Terry Fire Department, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Baptist EMS, and Air Evac 159 out of Paris.

The investigation remains ongoing.
