McKenzie City Council member Jessie Townes entered into a plea deal for his charge of assault during a court appearance May 20 in Carroll County General Sessions Court. The charge stems from an April 15 traffic stop involving his wife.

Townes, 64, was granted judicial diversion as part of a plea deal. He received a sentence of 11 months and 29 days, with supervised probation until he pays $525 in restitution to the McKenzie Police Department. After payment, the remainder of his sentence will be served on unsupervised probation.

The incident occurred after Patrolman Dustin McClure pulled over Cheryl Oglesby-Townes for illegal window tint. Townes arrived on scene, became aggressive, and struck the officer in the chest during an attempt to detain him, according to police.

Townes initially received a citation but later turned himself in after a warrant was issued for assault on a law enforcement officer.

Video of the incident is included below.
