HR-B SSD Honors Students, Approves Tree Removal Project

Central High School Beta, Elementary Beta, and SkillsUSA students were recognized at Hollow Rock-Bruceton’s Special School District board meeting August 11. The board also voted to cut more than 20 pine trees next to school property that have damaged the pavement leading toward the field house.

Student Recognitions

Director of Schools, Dr. Myles Hebrard, opened the meeting with a series of recognitions for students who earned accolades at conventions over the summer.

Beta

Four High School Beta students took turns sharing their experiences at the national Beta Convention in Orlando, including juniors Avery Hollingsworth, Abigail Hollingsworth, and Ansley Hollingsworth, and senior Sarah Smith.

All four students said that they enjoyed meeting Beta members from all over the country.

Smith said she enjoyed seeing her friends from other schools at the convention, notably Tylan Johnson and Claudia Cooper from Huntingdon.

"I was really happy to see Carroll County out there representing," she said.

Hebrard congratulated the students, and said that they were great role models for the younger Beta students to model.

"Thank you for being a great representative of our school, and of our county," he said.

SkillsUSA

Junior Stella Higdon spoke about her trip to the national SkillsUSA convention in Atlanta, Georgia.

“I really had so much fun,” Higdon said. “I was able to go through the employment application process."

She earned top 11 in the nation in the Employment application Process division.

"It was a really great experience," Higdon added.

Elementary Beta

Elementary Beta students Ariella Hall and Kaylynn Barrett won a national championship in the Performing Arts Solo, Duo, Trio: Variety category at the National Elementary Beta Convention in Orlando.

“As old as I am, I’ve never been called a national champion,” Hebrard said. “Congratulations. This is something very few people get to say, and we are so proud it happened here.”

He also recognized Shiloh Hollingsworth, who placed second in the nation in photography.

“That beautiful picture is always going to be yours,” Hebrard told her. “But I would love to display it here because it’s something everyone should see. Your school is now home to a national runner-up in photography, and that’s a remarkable achievement.”

Board Chairman Brad Hurley praised the students and their families for their dedication.

“The board is very proud of your accomplishments,” Hurley said. “You are truly a shining example of the great students we have in our system.”

Outgoing Principal

During the meeting, Dr. Hebrard recognized outgoing Central Elementary Principal Deborah Martin.

Martin retired from Central Elementary School after more than 30 years. She served as Principal for just over a decade of her tenure.

Dr. Hebrard praised her years of dedication to students and the community.

“Her heart is big and she just loves her kiddos," He said. "She is truly a champion for children."

Board Chairman Hurley added his own reflection.

“Except for one year in Mississippi, your entire career has been here,” Hurley said to Martin. “When you look at the lives you’ve touched, it’s been nothing but positive. There’s never been a question about your commitment to children, and for that, we are grateful.”

Martin said in previous comments that she retired from education to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Tree Removal

The board approved a $10,500 project to cut down roughly 23 pine trees along the eastern drive going toward the field house.

Roots of those trees have begun pushing up the pavement in areas, creating what some have referred to as “natural speed bumps.”

“This is just the beginning of a process,” Hebrard explained. “Some of the pre-work includes removing trees that are causing cracks and bumps. My goal is to bring you several proposals later this year on how we can improve traffic flow and safety around campus.”

Hurley agreed that the work is necessary to prepare for larger improvements. “Those natural speed bumps are all from roots coming out, which is why you’ve got to take the trees out,” he said. “This will also allow us to address drainage issues that have been causing problems.”

Other Business

The board approved appointments to the Student Discipline Hearing Authority and formally recognized the district’s school support organizations, which raised more than $80,000 for students last year.

Policies on emergency preparedness, student progress reporting, and cell phone use were also updated.

Hebrard closed the meeting by thanking staff for their dedication during the busy start to the new year. “Through all the obstacles and adversity, we have a great staff who continue to show up and put in the work,” he said.

The Director also said that enrollment for the year currently stands at about 630 students.

He told the board that figure is likely to fluctuate slightly as families settle in.

“I may see 630 on Friday, but it could be 624 or 631 the next week as people move in and out,” he said.

Hollow Rock-Bruceton's next school board meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 8.
