Kenton Smith for the second week in a row led a Mustang offensive attack with 14 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns and passed for two more touchdowns and 40 yards. The Mustangs as a team ran for 404 yards and overcame a 6-0 deficit to start the game and reeled off 37 unanswered points to defeat the Camden Lions 63-18. 43 of the Mustang 63 points came in the first half of the game as the Mustangs move to 2-0 to start the season.
The Lions had a strong first half offensively but the Mustang defense forced three turnovers, recovering two fumbles and an interception for a touchdown.
The Lions struck first when Jake Reynoldson running the read option, called his own number and raced 80 yards untouched as the Lions took a 6-0 lead after the two-point conversion failed.
It took one play for the Mustangs to answer. After returning the kickoff to the Mustang 45 Hayes Eubanks got the call on the handoff and found his way through traffic and went 55-yards for the touchdown with only 34 seconds off the first quarter clock. Greyson Anderson gave the Mustangs a 7-6 lead with a successful kick on the PAT.
The Mustangs struck again after a Lion punt with 7:35 left in the first quarter. The Mustangs started at their 48 and two plays later, K’Shun Carter outran the Lion defense for a 46-yard run for the touchdown. Anderson was good on his second extra point attempt and the Mustangs led 14-6.
A Eubanks sack of Reynoldson forced the Lions to punt again and the punt was partially blocked giving the ball to the Mustang offense at the Lion 22. On the first play Kenton Smith connected with Colt Wodd for a 22-yard touchdown with 5:53 left in the first quarter, giving the Mustangs three touchdowns in their first four offensive plays. Anderson’s PAT was blocked and the score stood at 20-6.
The Lions then mounted a nine-play drive that covered 80 yards on the legs and arms of Reynoldson. Reynoldson ran five times for 46 yards on the drive and completed three passes for 30 yards and scored the TD on a 14-yard run. The conversion failed and the Lions shrunk the lead to 20-12.
The mustangs answered with a five-play drive that covered 80-yards and was highlighted by a 39-yard run by Wood and the touchdown came on a Smith six-yard run with 10:57 left in the half. The Mustangs went for two and failed to make the score 26-12.
The Lions roared right back with a 67-yard seven-play drive to score on a seven-yard pass from Reynoldson to Kade Johnson with 6:34 left in the half. The conversion again failed and the Lions trailed 26-18.
The Mustangs then scored 37 unanswered points starting with their next drive. Carter scored his second touchdown of the night to cap a seven play 63-yard drive. The TD came on an 18-yard run with 3:07 left in the second. Anderson kicked the PAT and the lead grew to 33-18.
The Mustangs got the ball back at the Lion 19 after a short punt and Smith and Wodd hooked up again for an 18-yard touchdown with 37.5 seconds left in the half. Anderson kicked the PAT and a 40-18 lead.
The Mustangs took advantage of a Lion turnover as Eubanks recovered a Camden fumble at the Lion 17 with 25 seconds left in the half. After losing 11 yards to a sack, Smith ran seven yards to the 21 and Anderson came on and kicked a 38-yard field goal to give the Mustangs a 43-18 lead at the half.
The Mustangs scored to open the second half on a seven-play drive for 62 yards, and the touchdown came on an eight-yard run by Smith. Anderson’s point after gave the Mustangs a 50-18 lead.
Camden took over at their 20 and on second down, Reynoldson tried a pass in the flat that Zayden Connelly stepped in front of and raced untouched into the end zone for a 30-yard pic six. Ethan Raffield kicked the PAT and the Mustangs led 57-18.
The Mustangs final score of the night came on a 14-yard drive by the Mustang JV and covered 73 yards and the TD came on a one-yard run by Kingston Smith. The PAT was blocked but the Mustangs had a 63-18 win.
Eubanks added 82-yards rushing for the Mustangs on four attempts and had a sack defensively. Carter ran twice for 64 yards and two touchdowns, Colt Wood had 39-yards rushing on one carry and caught two passes for touchdowns and 40 yards. Freshman Noah Webb added 66 yards on nine attempts.
Camden had 130 yards rushing on 24 attempt and passed 11-17 for 130 yards.
The Mustangs host Milan this week in a region matchup at Paul Ward Stadium and a 7 p.m. scheduled kickoff.
