West Carroll Special School District officials issued statements following the arrest of educational assistant Bernard Lykes, who was charged Wednesday, September 17 with assault and coercion or persuasion of a witness after an incident involving a student.

Kelly Medina, acting superintendent while Director Preston Caldwell is out, said the district is “aware of the situation. It has been handled from our end, and we have no further comment at this time.”
Caldwell confirmed over the phone that the incident took place at West Carroll Junior/Senior High School.
“The incident was between the staff member and a student that started as horseplay,” Caldwell said. “The horseplay became aggressive and the staff member was relieved of his duties before the end of school [Wednesday] afternoon.”
Junior/Senior High School Principal Adam Douglas noted only that the school system had followed its internal procedures and issued appropriate discipline but declined to elaborate further.
Officials emphasized that no one within the school system had pressed charges. Charges against Lykes were filed by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, not the district nor the student involved.
