CARROLL COUNTY, Tenn. — A local author has turned years of family research into a historical fiction novel set right here in Carroll County during one of the most turbulent periods in American history.

Mel Bradford recently released “Will the Family Circle Be Broken?: Civil War in Carroll County, Tennessee,” published through Christian Faith Publishing. The novel follows the Bradford family from 1850 to 1865, as they discover that neutrality becomes impossible when war arrives at their doorstep.

Each chapter is anchored by factual summaries of events happening across the nation during the period, grounding the fictional story in authentic historical context.

At the heart of the story is Kathy, a paper delivery girl harboring a secret that threatens those closest to her, while bushwhackers and lawlessness transform Carroll County into a battleground where survival itself becomes uncertain.

The book also explores how a group of local coffee drinkers established their own form of vigilante justice when official authority collapsed — a detail rooted in Bradford’s research into the county’s history.

“This story represents years of family research and historical study,” Bradford said. “I wanted to show how the Civil War affected ordinary people in small Tennessee communities.”

The book is available through Christian Faith Publishing.
