Carroll County Observer is saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Buddy Smothers.
He was a treasure trove of knowledge about Carroll County’s history.
Smothers was a graduate of, and later became a teacher and coach at Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central. He coached baseball and basketball. In the late ’70s, Coach Smothers led the basketball team to the only state championship in its history.
For nearly 40 years, he was the “Voice of the Tigers”, providing broadcast commentary alongside Bobby “Flash” Melton with WRJB. The two called Central High School’s football state championship in 1989, along with numerous other events.
Smothers also served in the Bruceton Lions Club for many decades.
Coach Smothers was a true inspiration and a wonderful friend to us here at Carroll County Observer. We appreciate all of his encouragement over the years and strive to meet the example he set in our community.
He will be sorely missed.
